Polly put the Kettle on - June 2015

Hello! 

Another month has flown by and we find ourselves at the beginning of June. 

As last month we had a theme of France, I thought it was only fitting that this month should be the UK. (I'm a Brit abroad for those who don't know!)

Encore un mois qui s'est vite passé et nous nous retrouvons au mois de juin. 

Vu que notre dernier thème était la France, il me semblait normale que cette fois-ci on se pencherait sur le Royaume Uni ( je suis anglaise, pour ceux qui ne le savaient pas!) 

So over to you - it can be absolutely anything - whatever pops into your head when you think of the UK and its constituent parts - england, scotland, N ireland and wales, whether positive or negative and take any form, pencil sketch, modelling clay, photo, whatever you have to hand. Just post your entry here, on facebook, pinterest or instagram before midnight Sunday 14 June. 

Donc à vous de jouer - il n'ya pas de limite - la première chose que entre en tête quand vous imaginez le Royaume Uni et tous ses pays - l'angleterre; l'écosse; l'irelande du nord et le pays des galles. Ça peut-être quelque chose de positif ou négatif et vous avez libre choix pour le matériel: crayon de papier; pâte à modeler; photographie, ce que vous avez sous les mains! Il faut juste le poster ici, sur fb, sur pinterest ou instagram avant minuit, dimanche le 14 juin. 

Today I'll share my initial sketch which I made whilst on the Wednesday taxi run - just to prove you don't need much time or equipment or artistic skill for that matter!

 

 

 

Aujourd'hui je partage mon ésquisse que j'ai fait un mercredi le temps je faisais le course de taxi - pour vous montrer qu'il ne nécessite pas ni beaucoup de temps ni matériels; ni de talent artistique! 

I'll share the finished article on Wednesday as part of my WPW submission, so don't forget to call by then.

Ok, looks like you need some inspiration for this month's theme - so I've started a brain-storming session for all things French. 

Ok, donc apparement vous manquez de l'inspiration pour le thème de ce mois-ci - donc j'ai commencé un 'brain-storming' pour les idées franco-français.


Strangely enough the first three things I thought of were all food related... but there are hundreds of other things that would work - anything goes (as long as it's fit to publish!!)

Les trois premiers choses qui ont sauté dans ma tête étataient tous liées à la nourriture - bizzare ça! Mais il n'ya pas de limite (sauf qu'il soit correcte pour publier!!)

So up to you to play - add your word(s) (and preferably picutres tto) here or on the fb page.  and if you're joining in on Fb, why not tag a friend (or three) and get them to join in too - the more the merrier!

Maintenant - à vous de joeur - ajoutez votre mot  /vos mots ( de préférence avec des images) ici ou sur le page fb.  Si vous jouez sur fb, pourquoi pas 'tagger' un ami (ou trois) - venez nombreux!

Polly put the kettle on - May 2015

Hi! Goodness me, it's May already - where did the time go? To get the month off to a flying start, here is our monthly sketch challenge, and this month the theme is France.  On the fourth of May, it will be 13 years since I first came to live in France, talk about time flying!  So I thought what better for this month's theme than 'la belle France'.  It's completely up to you how you interpret the theme - just remember that the idea is a quick 10 minute sketch, in any format. 

 

Salut! Ce n'est pas possible qu'on est déjà au mois de mai - comme le temps passe vite! Pour bien démarrer le mois, voici notre défi - un esquisse sur le thème de la France.  Le quatre du mois, j'aurais vécu treize ans sur le sol français - comme je disais - le temps passe vite!  Donc pour fêter ça, j'ai choisi comme thème 'la belle France'.  Vous pouvez l'interpreter comme vous voulez, mais souvenz-vous que l'objectif est de faire un croquis, dans le format de votre choix, mais qui prends 10 minutes maxi.  Le temps d'un 'tea break' (pause de thè ;) )

 

 

 

Last month we had two younger winners, so from now on there will be two age groups - under 12 and over (as far over as you like!!) - with two prizes.  The age range is fairly arbitrary - i'm sure most 12 year olds can draw better than me - it's more to do with the prizes than artistic ability. 

Le mois dernier, on a eu deux jeunes gagnants, donc cette fois, on a fait deux categories d'âge - moins de 12 ans et plus de 12 ans (sans limites!) avec deux prixs différents.  La limite des âges étant plutôt en relation avec les prix que le talent artistique.

So, what have I been up to?  This month I wanted to change things slightly and show you my sketches first rather than the finished piece.  For me the process of making things is just as fascinating as the finished object, so I wanted to share mine.  More pictures to follow ( what a tease!)

Alors, qu'est-ce que j'ai fait pour vous?  Cette fois-ci, je voulais vous montrez mes équisses d'abord avant de vous montrer l'oeuvre final.  Pour moi, le processus créatif est aussi intéressant que l'objet qu'on a créé, donc je voulais partager le mien avec vous.  Il y aura d'autres clichés dans les jours qui suivent.

So the 'adult' prize... Here in France the 1st of May is a bank holiday, whichever day of the week it falls on - bank holiday friday is ace :) And the tradition is to search for Lily of the Valley in the woods, or failing that, buy some from the many vendors who suddenly appear everywhere.  So my main sketch is some 'Mueguet' (pronounced Moo Gay - not a pretty name! )

Donc, pour le prix pour les 'adultes' ...Ici en france, le premier mai est ferié, est c'est la tradition d'aller chercher du muguet (Lily of the Valley en anglais, qui est beaucoup plus beau comme nom) Donc voici mes premiers croquis.

For the 'kids' prize, well who could think of France without thinking of the Eiffel Tower?  Flowers are all well and good, but you can't beat a bit of elegant engineering - a what an icon it has become. The kits I made for last month were really appreciated, so i wanted to continue along the same line.  The challenge was how to turn 'la dame de fer' - or 'the iron lady' if you prefer - and no not Maggie Thatcher, it's the french nickname for the Eiffel Tower, into something that could be made by our younger fans. 

Pour les plus jeunes, qui peut pensait de la France, sans penser du Tour Eiffel?  Bof, les fleurs sont jolies, bien sûr, mais pour moi la beauté du génie civil est sans égal, et quelle icône!  Je voulais continuer l'idée de faire un kit, donc pour moi le challenge était comment revisiter la dame de fer (pour les anglais ça veut dire Mme Thatcher! ) dans un format destiner aux nos jeunes fans.



So, I was sketching away, when it occured to me that actually I was mainly drawing crosses.  Hmm, cross stitch - but in different sizes...so I hit on the idea of making a more sophisticated version of the lacing cards I'd enjoyed as a kid, but using a needle and thread.  And I have to say, I'm really pleased with the result.  My first version was a bit wonky (and urm pink), but with some fine tuning it might just work... So watch this space, you haven't seen that last of this one!

Donc, je dessinais quand je me suis rendue compte, qu'on fait il s'agit d'un serie de croix - des pointes crox! Mais plutôt dans une version plus sophistiqué avec une aiguille et du fils.  Il faut dire, même si c'st moi qui le dise, que ça ma beaucoup plu.  Même si le premier version est un peux branlant (et rose!) masi avec un peu de travail, ça peut aller...

Our fishy winners

Polly put the kettle on - Poisson d'avril!

Hi - and no this isn't an April fool - today I'm launching the second Polly design challenge - and this time the theme is fish.  Fish??? Yes, fish - last month we had an english tradition, so this time we're going à la français - seeing as that's where I live.

Coucou - et non, ceci n'est pas un poisson d'avril - aujourd'hui je lance le deuxième défi Polly - et cette fois le thème est des poissons.  Le mois dernier on  a pris une tradition anglaise, donc cette fois-ci on fait à la français, vu que c'est là ou j'habite.

The french equivalent of an april fool is a 'poisson d'avril' - an april fish.  for the most part, instead of playing practical jokes, the kids stick pictures of fish on people's backs... Pretty harmless, but nonetheless hysterically funny ( if you're between the ages of 4-10 ...)

(ici le version anglais explique à nos amis d'outre-manche pourquoi les poissons sont liées au 1er avril.  En anglais on dit - les fous d'avril)  

So my challenge to you is to submit a fish - in any medium you choose - by hand, digital or photographed - but it shouldn't take any longer than the time to take a tea break.

Alors, le  challenge pour vous est de soumettre un poisson - dans le media de votre choix - manuel, numérique ou photographie - seul régle, qu'il ne doit pas prendre plus long que votre pause café.

There is absolutely no need to have any kind of artistic ability to enter, and it's open to any age - if there are enough kids I might make a separate kids prize.  Just add your pic to the comments here or on the fb page or Pinterest (you'll need to email me so i can add you to the pinterest board)

Il n'y a aucun besoin d'avoir du talent artistique - et c'est ouvert à toutes les âges - s'il y a assez d'enfants je ferai une deuxième prix pour les 'kids' .  Il faut simplement poster l'image ici dans les commentaires ou sur notre page FB ou Pinterest ( il faut m'envoyer un email si vous souhaitez être ajouté au page pinterest).

So what are you waiting for?  Go put the kettle on and sketch me a fish :) You have until midnight on Sunday 12th April, so there's plenty of time after you've eaten your choccy eggs!

White rabbits - "and the winner is..."

Polly put the kettle on - White Rabbits!

Hello! As it's the first of March, I thought it would be a good time to launch my new challenge: 

"Polly put the kettle on..."   with the theme of White Rabbits. 

Salut! Vu qu'on est le premier mars, je pense que ça tombe bien pour lancer un petit défi : Polly put the kettle on ( Polly démarre le bouilloire  - c'est un comptine anglais pour ceux qui ne le savait pas ;) ) et avec pour thèmatique 'white rabbits' ( les lapins blancs - encore la folie anglaise - c'est une phrase qu'on dit le premier du mois pour avoir de la chance pendant le mois à venir) 

Ok, so i'll explain the principle - I want to see your artwork, but only what can be completed in the time it takes to put the kettle on and drink your cuppa ( or switch the coffee machine on and wait for George Clooney to arrive if you prefer ;) ...) . It can be any medium - ball point pen on the back of an envelope is fine, dance or mime might be a little difficult, but why not?! We could all do with a good laugh I'm sure! 

Donc je vous explique - je veux voir vos oeuvres d'art - mais seulement ce que vous pouvez faire dans le temps qu'il faut pour préparer et boire une tasse de thé ( ou faire couler le café et attendre l'arrivé de Georges Clooney si vous préférez ;)...) Vous pouvez utiliser n'importe quel medium - un bic sur l'arrière d'un envelope est tout à fait bon, la danse est peut-être plus difficile mais pourquoi pas? On a tous besoin de rigoler!! 

Just make your sketch, then upload it to here, the facebook page or Pinterest before close of play next Sunday (8th March) and my favourite will receive my attempt at the challenge.  No cash equivalent will be offered (mainly because it probably isn't worth anything ) it's just for fun and to get everyone drawing instead of playing Candy Crush whotsit.
